Alan Whiteside is Chair of Global Health Policy in Balsillie School of International Affairs (BSIA) and School of International Policy and Governance (SIPG) at Wilfrid Laurier University. He is Emeritus Professor at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN). He is the founder and was Executive Director of the Health Economics and HIV/AIDS Research Division (HEARD) at UKZN. His Key areas of interest are non-communicable diseases (NCDs); urbanization and urban health, and health financing and choices. He is Board member of Aidspan, a Member of Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) and Member of International AIDS Economics Network (IAEN). His published output is extensive. Between 2010 and 2019 he wrote or co-wrote 36 peer-reviewed articles, eight book chapters and published the 2nd edition of HIV and AIDS: A Very Short Introduction. Since 2000 he has co-written two books and co-edited six. The work and writing have an interdisciplinary, practical orientation. He is Editor-in Chief of the African Journal of AIDS Research. He retains excellent networks, working internationally with many organisations and eminent individuals in development and global health. He has enduring work relationships with leading scholars, and a global collaborative network in academia, the UN system, leading NGOs, think tanks, DFID, SIDA and other donors, inter alia the Gates Foundation.
