Dr. Waiswa is an Associate Professor of Health Policy Planning and Management of the School of Public Health at Makerere University College of Health Sciences. He has training in medicine from the Mbarara University, Uganda and Public Health from Hebrew University, Jerusalem, Israel and a PhD and Postdoc (both joint Makerere University and Karolinska Institutet, Sweden). Prior to joining academia, he worked as a district medical officer with the Ministry of Health for 8 years in Uganda. He is the Founder and Coordinator of the INDEPTH Network Maternal and Newborn Research Group in Accra, Ghana, and the Makerere University Maternal and Newborn Centre of Excellence in Uganda. His research interests include health systems, implementation research, and evaluation with a special focus on maternal, newborn, and child health. Dr. Waiswa is one of the leading African researchers on maternal, newborn, and child health and he is widely published with over 100 publications, books, and blogs. Waiswa is/has participated regularly in an adversary role to WHO, UNICEF, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, International Pediatric ssociation, East African Community, African Academy of Sciences, and more. Dr. Waiswa also promotes research activities through social media where he engages thousands of policymakers, academia, funders, and the public at sites such as Makerere University Maternal and Newborn Centre of Excellence and others.
