Professor Jimmy Volmink is Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences and Professor in the Department of Global Health at Stellenbosch University (SU). He previously served as the founding Director of Cochrane South Africa, as well as Director of Research and Analysis at the Global Health Council in Washington DC. He holds BSc and MBChB degrees from the University of Cape Town (UCT) and a DCH from the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa (CMSA). He further obtained an MPH from Harvard University and a DPhil in Epidemiology from the University of Oxford.
His special interests include evaluating the effects of health interventions, promoting evidence-based decision making, addressing inequalities and building research capacity. These interests have been shaped by a life journey which has traversed the social, political and human rights struggles of twentieth-century South Africa. He is an elected member of the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) and an elected Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. He has also received the Leverhulme Medal for Distinguished Contribution from the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and a Recognition Award for his contributions to Evidence-based Health Care in Africa from the South African Medical Research Council.
