Dr Cristiano Vernesi a population geneticist by training. He holds a PhD from the University of Florence, Italy. His current research activity is focussed on the genetic dimension of biodiversity. He is using DNA-based approaches such as eDNA metabarcoding, genomics and aDNA, to characterize intra-species genetic diversity in order to assess the evolutionary adaptive potentials of relevant ecosystem species in face of current global change. Moreover, He is particularly active in the science-policy interface: in fact, He is chairing a COST Action called G-BiKE which is specifically addressing the need to include genetic diversity into any new regulation/recommendation/guideline at both the European and the international level. Through G-BiKe they are currently providing several indications to the National Representative of the Convention of Biological Diversity with particular attention to the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework.
