van der Walt is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Information Science at Stellenbosch University. His teaching responsibilities included modules on information organization and retrieval, competitive intelligence, information management, information security, and project management, as well as coordination of the MPhil program in Information and Knowledge Management and supervision of a large number of research projects of Masters students in this program. Most of his research was in the field of information organization. In 2007 he retired from my full-time position, he continued as lecturer and research supervisor in a part-time capacity until the end of 2009, after which he did contract work in connection with Masters theses for the University for a number of years. At present (2020) is a co-supervisor for a DPhil student on the topic of Knowledge Security, also acted as an external examiner for Masters theses for a number of South African universities. He was a member of the Library and Information Association of South Africa (LIASA), the SA Online User Group, the Special Libraries User Group, and the International Society for Knowledge Organization (ISKO). For ISKO he served on the Executive Committee (2002-2006) and acted as a consulting editor for Knowledge Organization, the official journal of the organization.
