Professor Clinton David van der Merwe is an Associate Professor of geography education in the Department of Humanities Education, Faculty of Education at the University of Pretoria. He has a PhD in heritage tourism at the University of Johannesburg and is interested in teaching geography, sustainable development, and cultural and heritage tourism. Before joining the University of Pretoria, he was the Head of Humanities, acting Head of Academics, and a senior geography teacher at the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls. Prof. van der Merwe was chairperson of the Southern African Geography Teachers’ Association (SAGTA) from 2018 to 2020. He was instrumental in establishing the South African National Geography Olympiad (SANGO) in 2017 and is the Founding Editor of the Journal of Geography Education in Africa (JoGEA), accredited by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET). He was also the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal for Transdisciplinary Research in Southern Africa, he is the social media editor of the Journal of Heritage Tourism, and serves on several editorial boards of international journals. Prof. van der Merwe has presented geography lessons on television for many years and was a national examiner for geography at the Department of Basic Education from 2014 to 2018. He was appointed by the Minister as a member of the South African Geographical Names Council (SAGNC) from 2014 to 2018. Prof. van der Merwe received a C2 rating from the National Research Foundation (NRF).
