Dr Nnedinma Umeokafor [PhD, MSc (PM), MSc (QS&CM), PGCAP, Dip NCRQ, FHEA, FAPM, MCIOB, CertIOSH] is a Chartered Construction Manager, Programme Leader and Senior Lecturer in Built Environment at University of Greenwich, United Kingdom. He has expertise in construction management; project management; construction law and contracts; occupational safety, health and wellbeing: and regulation and compliance research, teaching and practice.
He is research-active with over 80 publications in leading reputable refereed built environment and safety, health and environment journals (e.g. Elsevier Safety Science), international conferences (e.g. International Council for Research and Innovation in Building and Construction (CIB) W099) and book chapters. He is the first or sole author in at least 50 of them and the second in at least 19. While health safety and wellbeing is Dr Umeokafor's main area of research, other areas are not limited to regulation and compliance; construction management; project management; digital construction; sustainability; and pedagogic research. As Principal Investigator and Co-Principal Investigator, his works have been funded by organisations such as the British Council, and Lloyd’s Register Foundation.
Dr Umeokafor is an Associate Editor for Management, Procurement and Law Journal (Emerald Publishing) (Q2 Safety, Risk, Reliability and Quality; Impact factor 1.8, indexed in Scopus and Web of Science (Clarivate Analytics); CIB encouraged journal) and the Journal of Construction Business and Management, an Academic Editor for Depression and Anxiety Journal (Q1; 7.4 impact factor; indexed in Scopus and Web of Science (Clarivate Analytics)) and Guest Editor for high-ranking Journals such and the International Journal of Construction Management (Q1). He is also a regular reviewer for, at least, 11 high-ranking international journals not limited to the Construction Management and Economics journal, Elsevier Safety Science, and International Journal of Construction Management.
He is affiliated with professional bodies as a Fellow of Higher Education Academy (FHEA); a Fellow Member, Association for Project Management (FAPM); a Certified Member, Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (CertIOSH); and the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) where he is a Chartered Member (MCIOB) achieving the title ‘Chartered Construction Manager’. Nnedinma is the Secretary of IOSH London Metropolitan Construction Section and a Member of the CIOB Accreditation Panel.
Dr Umeokafor has held academic positions in other high education institutions in the United Kingdom, for example, Liverpool John Moores University, Liverpool, University of East London and University College of Estate Management (UCEM), and Kingston University, London, where he was a Senior Lecturer in Construction Law and the Course Leader for Undergraduate BSc programmes. Dr Umeokafor has also held various industrial and consultancy positions abroad and in the United Kingdom. He supervises PhD students and has been appointed External Examiner for PhD and Master’s research and undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in the United Kingdom, South Africa, Singapore, West Indies, and Sri Lanka.
He holds a PhD degree that examines complex regulatory systems in construction health and safety and the links the contextual environments. Other academic qualifications are not limited to: two master’s degrees, MSc in Project Management (sustainable behaviour dissertation), and MSc in Quantity Surveying and Commercial Management (digital technologies in infrastructure development dissertation); Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PGCAP), and the National Compliance and Risk Qualifications (NCRQ) and AIM Level 6 Diploma in Applied Health and Safety (Dip NCRQ) (equivalent to bachelor’s degree level).
Dr Umeokafor has received various honours/recognitions/awards not limited to the CIB W099 bursary Award; UCEM Principal's Development Award; the 2019 Taylor and Francis Book and Digital Product Award in the Outstanding Monograph Category in 2020; and the Ceylon Institute of Builders (CIOB) Best Paper Award at the 9th World Construction Symposium, 9-10 July 2021, Sri Lanka.
