Prof Delfim F. M. Torres is a Mathematician born in Nampula, Mozambique, in August 1971. He obtained a PhD in Mathematics from the University of Aveiro (UA), Portugal, in 2002, and Habilitation in Mathematics, UA, in 2011.
Dr Torres is currently a Full Professor, Director of the R&D Unit CIDMA, and Director of the Doctoral Programme Consortium MAP-PDMA in Applied Mathematics.
He is a Renowned and Acclaimed Mathematician, having been awarded the title of Highly Cited Researcher in Mathematics in 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2019. His main Research area is the calculus of variations and optimal control; optimization; fractional derivatives and integrals; dynamic equations on time scales; and Mathematical Biology.
Prof Torres has Written outstanding scientific and pedagogical Publications in the area of the calculus of variations, optimal control and its applications, and related areas. In particular, he has Co-Authored two books with Imperial College Press and 3 books with Springer.
He has a strong Experience in graduate and post-graduate Student Supervision and Teaching in mathematics. In particular, over the past few years, he has Taught several Master and PhD courses on Optimal Control in Africa, to African students in the areas of Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, and Engineering, at the University of Cape Verde, Cape Verde, regularly since 2007; as a Visiting Professor of the Ministry of Science and Technology in Mozambique, 2009; at The African University of Science and Technology (AUST-Abuja), Nigeria, in 2008 and 2009; at The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) in Cape Town, South Africa, 2009, and at AUST-Cameroon, Limbe, Cameroon, 2017; and at Adama Science and Technology University (ASTU), Adama, Ethiopia, 2018 and 2019.
Nineteen PhD students in Mathematics and eleven post-docs have already successfully finished under his supervision. Professionally, Prof Torres has visited 10 different countries in Africa.
