Brief Biography (English)
Dr Swart moved from Johannesburg to Cape Town in 2010 and completed Her BSc, BSc (Hons), and PhD at the University of Cape Town in 2012, 2013, and 2018, respectively. She then changed fields, from neuroscience, working on animal models of FASD, to psychiatric genetics, working on the genetic risk of PTSD, this was quite a steep learning curve for Dr. Swart. From there, She got the opportunity to build up the saNeuroGut Project, and investigate the role of the gut microbiome, genetics, and environmental factors on the risk and development of psychiatric disorders, mainly anxiety, depression, and PTSD, in South African participants.
