Brief Biography (English)

Dr Bruno Sunguya is a Senior Lecturer of Public Health Nutrition at the School of Public Health and Social Sciences, and the Director of Research and Publications at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS). He is also a Visiting Associate Professor of Kumamoto University in Japan. He did his doctor of Medicine degree at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS), Master of Science and PhD at the University of Tokyo, Japan, and has over ten-year experience in public health nutrition, food security, maternal and child research, health systems, and HIV/AIDS research. He has worked and led teams to develop national guidelines on various aspects including STIs, HIV/AIDS and TB; Nutrition; and Reproductive and Child Health for Tanzania mainland and Zanzibar. He leads National Representative Surveys in HIV Drug Resistance, ANC Surveillance, and Data Quality Assurance for HIV. He has conducted a number of researches in nutrition and other public health fields and disseminated his research work widely in more than 70 peer reviewed research articles, 3 book chapters, and international conferences in Africa, Asia, and Australia.

Before joining Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS), Dr Sunguya worked Muhimbili National Hospital as a clinician, and with the Department of Nutrition for Health and Development, in World Health Organization (WHO), Geneva as an intern. Currently, he is also serving as an Associate Editor for the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition and BMC nutrition journal, and Tanzania Medical Journal. He is also an HIV implementation science fellow at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) and Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health program; a senior research mentor for THET program; a core member of the Tanzania Immunization Technical Advisory Committee; a core member of the National committee on Adverse Events Following Immunisation; a member of National Measles Certification committee; a member of the World Health Organization (WHO) Nutrition Guidance Expert Advisory Group-Subgroup on Diet and Health. He chairs the MUHAS Research and Ethics Committee and is a contact person for research collaborations and grants for the institution.
