Brief Biography (English)

Mariam Danladi Solomon is a Professor of Nutritional Biochemistry at the University of Jos, Nigeria where she currently works as a researcher, teacher, and administrator. She served as Head of Department, Director of Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES), Deputy Dean of the Faculty and Dean, Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences. She is also engaged in various Community service. She holds Bachelor, Masters, and PhD Degrees in Biochemistry and Nutritional Biochemistry respectively. She also attended Higher Education Resources Services Academy (HERS-SA) in Cape Town, South Africa, Advanced School on Molecular Aspects of the Metabolic Syndrome, Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, IRAN, and Responsible Conduct of Research/ Case-Based Method of Teaching & amp; Mentoring Training. She was a Visiting Reader at Bingham University, Karu, Nigeria, and Visiting Professor at Plateau State University, Nigeria. She is the External Examiner to several institutions and the  Editorial Board Member of the Journal of Medicine in the Tropics and Iranian Journal of Neonatology.

Her main career goal is seeking opportunities that will be engaging, supportive, knowledge and passion-driven, were to contribute knowledge and ideas at a professional level while keeping to ethics, initiatives, selfless service, and responsible conduct. Over the years, she has conducted researches and published over 40 articles in peer-reviewed
journals as well as supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate student researches.

Mariam's research focus is on the formulation and nutritional evaluation of composite blends used as complementary foods and functional foods, analysis of edible insects and caterpillars that have implications for poverty alleviation and food security, the study of heavy and trace metals in vegetables, occupational and health risk, and nutritional status of stone crushers. She is therefore conversant with food formulation, nutrient, and mineral element analysis and assessment of nutritional status.

She is a member of the Nigeria Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (NSBMB), International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IUBMB), Nutrition Society of Nigeria(NSN), and the Federation of Africa Nutritional Societies (FANUS). She is an E-Fellow of the Jos-Carnegie Partnership, recipient award for Developmental and Female Leadership role in the University of Jos, Women Achiever’s Award, University of Jos Center for Gender and Women Studies.

Her research collaborations are State Coordinator, Per Capita consumption of Vitamin A fortified sugar, and vegetable oils in Nigeria, undertaken by the University of Ibadan/UNICEF, March – April 2006; Consultant, National Vitamin A Supplementation Evaluation (VASE), undertaken by MI and coordinated by HKI, April – May 2006; Zonal Independent Monitor, Vitamin A Supplementation during IPDS, 2006 – 2008; State Supervisor ITF – UNIJOS Joint Research Project on Evaluation of Impact of SIWES on Technical Skills Development in Nigeria, November 2007; and Principal Investigator, TETFund National Research Fund(NRF) on the Assessment of Health Risk and Environmental Impact of Manual Stone Crushing in North Central Nigeria, 2020.
