Brief Biography (English)

Dr Suzanne Smith is a Bioengineer with more than 10 years of experience in research and development of microsystems technologies. She completed her Dr-Ing magna cum laude at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in Germany, building on foundational electronic engineering and bioengineering degrees obtained from the University of Pretoria, South Africa. Her focus has largely been based on developing point-of-care health and environmental diagnostic solutions, with emphasis on resource-limited settings. Dr Smith's primary research interests include printed functionality to realize integrated, augmented and low-cost devices for point-of-care testing applications. This includes microfluidics, printed electronics, scalability and packaging aspects, where she concentrated her efforts on automated readout and communication of results from rapid tests. Dr Smith is currently a Senior Lecturer at the University of Pretoria, where she enjoys teaching foundational electronic engineering modules and sharing her passion for emerging novel and multidisciplinary engineering technologies with the students who will become the future engineers of Africa.
