Prof Stefan J. Siebert was born in Empangeni, South Africa in 1974. He received his undergraduate and postgraduate degrees with specialization in Botany from the University of Pretoria, culminating in a PhD in 2002. During this time he was also employed as the Regional Coordinator of the 10-country South African Botanical Diversity Network at the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) from 2001 to 2003. After his contract expired he held a position as Curator of the herbarium and Lecturer at the University of Zululand until 2007. Hereafter he was appointed as Senior Lecturer and Curator of the herbarium in the School of Environmental Sciences and Management at the North-West University (NWU) in Potchefstroom. In 2012 he was promoted to Associate Professor and in 2018 to Professor in Botany, all in the School of Biological Sciences. Prof Siebert also served as Stream Leader (2007-2011) and then Subprogram Manager (2012-2016) of Biodiversity and Conservation Ecology in the Research Unit for Environmental Sciences and Management at NWU. From 2017 to 2019 he was the Subject Head of Botany in the School of Biological Sciences.
