Alta Schutte is the Principal Theme Lead for Cardiac, Vascular and Metabolic Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine at University of New South Wales (UNSW); Professorial Fellow at The George Institute Australia; holds a professorial appointment at North-West University (NWU) and is the President of the International Society of Hypertension. She a leading researcher in hypertension and cardiovascular health, with a track record of research focusing on identifying early markers for the development of hypertension, and ultimately the prevention of hypertension and cardiovascular disease. She has been the Chief Investigator of  several multidisciplinary studies investigating social, environmental and behavioural determinants of raised blood pressure, subsequent organ damage and cardiovascular disease across the life course. She has published over 300 papers in the field, and is involved in numerous international consortia, such as the Global Burden of Disease study, the NCD Risk Factor Collaboration, May Measurement Month initiative of the International Society of Hypertension, World Health Organization working groups and the Lancet Commission of Hypertension.
