Brief Biography (English)

Prof Roux is currently Professor Emeritus (African Languages) as well as Extraordinary Professor (Afrikaans and Dutch) at the University of Stellenbosch. I was the Champion of the Department of Science and Innovation tasked with the establishment the South African Centre for Digital Language Resources (SADiLaR) in 2016 and the first Director of the Centre in 2017. South African Centre for Digital Language Resources (SADiLaR) is one of the national entities of the new South African Research Infrastructure (SARIR). His research interest is in language and speech technology applications applied to the African languages of Southern Africa. He is a fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and have conducted research at various occasions in Bonn, Stuttgart and Hamburg in Germany.

Prof Roux has participated in various governmental committees in South Africa and acted as chair of a Ministerial Advisory Panel which was tasked to prepare a strategic plan for the development of Human Language Technologies (HLT) in the country, which  eventually led to the establishment of South African Centre for Digital Language Resources (SADiLaR). Following from that he was the co-founder of the Digital Humanities Association of Southern Africa (DHASA) and the first President of the Association.
