Professor Andrea Barnabas Pembe is a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS), Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Before joining Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) in the year 2002, he worked in Sekou Toure Regional Hospital, Northern Tanzania as a Medical Officer for 3 years (1995-1998) and later as an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist for one year (2001-2002). Prof Pembe teaches obstetrics and gynaecology to undergraduate and postgraduate students and has supervised more than 20 Master degree students and one PhD student in the areas of obstetrics and gynaecology, public health, health systems and implementation science. He is involved in training of service providers on reproductive health including comprehensive post abortion care, family planning methods, assisted vaginal deliveries, management of postpartum haemorrhage, monitoring of labour and management of severe pre-eclampsia and eclampsia.
Prof Pembe has conducted researches with a number of collaborators internationally including Uppsala University and Karolinska Institute, Sweden; Leiden University Medical Centre, Netherland; Bergen University and Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Norway; University of Illinois at Chicago, USA. Other local Tanzanian institutions includes Ifakara Health Institute, National Institute of Medical Research, Marie Stopes Tanzania, University of Dar es Salaam, CSK solutions. He has more than 50 publications in local and international journals. He has participated in developing guidelines on reproductive and newborn health under the Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, elders and Children. The guidelines include management of malaria, basic and comprehensive emergency obstetric and neonatal care, emergency obstetric job aid, post abortion care and family planning and antenatal care.
Prof Pembe is the Vice Chancellor of Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) (2018 – date), Chair of the members of Thamini Uhai (2019 to date), Member of the Board of Directors of White Ribbon Tanzania (2014 to date) and an active member of Medical professionals associations including Medical Association of Tanzania, Association of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Tanzania and East Central and Southern College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. He was the President of the Association of Gynaecologists and Obstetricians of Tanzania (2014 – 2019) and Vice Chair of Board of Directors Thamini Uhai (2017-2019).
