Prof Kennedy Otwombe has several years’ experience working as a Biostatistician at the Perinatal HIV Research Unit (PHRU) of the University of the Witwatersrand (WITS), in clinical, epidemiological and socio-behavioral studies. He has mainly worked in the field of HIV and TB in infants, children, adolescents and adults.
Prof Kennedy's roles have included providing statistical input during the conceptualization phase of studies, preparation of randomization schedules, preparing and presenting Data Safety and Monitoring Board (DSMB) reports for clinical studies, statistical analysis for manuscripts and grant writing.
Currently, he is a Member of several DSMB committees in South Africa funded by various sponsors including US National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Additionally, Prof Kennedy holds an academic appointment at the School of Public Health, WITS, where he Teaches statistics and Supervises postgraduate students.
He has had the privilege of working with various collaborators including the Paediatric European Network of AIDS (PENTA) HIV Vaccine Trials Network (HVTN), the Medical Research Council Clinical Trial Unit in London, UK, Karolinska University Hospital in Sweden, Sahlgrenska Academy at Gothenburg University, South African Medical Research Council and The Consortium for Advanced Research Training in Africa (CARTA).
