Professor Micah Okwuchukwu Osilike holds BSc (1st Class Honours), MSc and PhD in Mathematics from University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN); and DICTP in Mathematics from the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (AS-ICTP), Trieste, Italy. He joined University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) as Lecturer II on 01/11/1991, and rose to Professor of Mathematics on 01/10/1998. His main research interest is in Fixed Point Theory and Applications (FPTA) where he has made invaluable contributions. He has proved several novel theorems, lemmas and propositions, and constructed several incisive examples that are outstanding contributions to the area. He introduced the k-strictly nonspreading and the asymptotically ϕ-demicontractive operators among others.
Prof Osilike is certainly one of the leading researchers in Fixed Point Theory and Applications (FPTA) in the world and undoubtedly the second most prominent one in the whole of Africa. One of his articles on strictly pseudocontractive mappings of Browder-Petryshyn-type is described in AMS Mathematical Reviews as a well-researched article which is very useful and fundamental to research mathematicians. He has over sixty-five (65) journal articles in reputable journals with over thirty-five in high impact Elsevier and Springer journals. In the 3rd Edition of the ranking of scientists in Nigeria Institutions according to their Google Scholar Citations public profiles released in October 2015, Professor Osilike was ranked among the top 20 in the whole Nigeria and among the top 4 in University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN). A member of Editorial Board of Abstract and Applied Analysis, and Journal of the Nigerian Mathematical Society (JNMS), Prof Osilike coordinates a formidable research group in Fixed Point Theory and Applications (FPTA) at University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN). Journal of the Nigerian Mathematical Society (JNMS) gained the attention of the Committee of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities and appeared in the reputed Elsevier ScienceDirect when Prof Osilike served as the Editor-in-Chief.
He has served University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) in several key academic positions—Head of Department of Mathematics, Associate Dean and Dean, Faculty of Physical Sciences etc. He has supervised several MSc and PhD degrees. The first position in the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) Vice-chancellor’s Prize for PhD thesis has been awarded to his candidates in 2001/2002; 2006/2007 and 2012/2013 sessions. In 2012/2013 he also received the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) Vice-chancellor’s Research Leadership Prize. He has been a great asset to Nigerian Mathematical Society where he was Assistant Secretary (2000—2006), Vice-President (2006—2009), Acting Editor-in-Chief (2008), Editor-in-Chief (2009—2011) and President (2011—2015). Professor Osilike was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Pastor E A Adeboye Professorial Chair in Mathematics at University of Lagos during the major part of the period he occupied the office of the President of the Nigerian Mathematical Society. He has been regular Associate of the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (AS-ICTP), Trieste, Italy for two terms, and he was a member of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) Governing Council 2009—2013, and currently the Director, Academic Planning Unit, University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN). On May 4, 2016 he was inducted into the Fellow of the Nigerian Mathematical Society (FNMS), and on May 12, 2016 he was inducted into the coveted Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Science (FAS).
