Professor Ikenna Obinwanne Onwuekwe is from Anambra State, Nigeria. Christian. He had secondary school education at Kings College Lagos before attending the University of Nigeria Nsukka, graduating with MBBS degree in 1995. National Youth Service was in Ogun state in 1996-1997 with merit award obtained. Postgraduate medical education commenced at University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH) Enugu in 1997 with the West African Postgraduate Medical College leading to awards of the Membership and Fellowship of the West African College of Physicians in Internal Medicine with specialisation in Neurology in the years 2000 and 2004 respectively. Fellowship Research Dissertation was on ‘Mild Cognitive Impairment in HIV Sero-positive Patients without Overt Neurological Disease in University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH) Enugu’.
In 2005, Prof Onwuekwe was appointed Lecturer I in Neurology and Internal Medicine, Department of Medicine, Faculty of Medical Sciences, College of Medicine, University of Nigeria Enugu Campus. Promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2008 and then to Associate Professor in 2011. Promoted in 2014 to the rank of Professor in Internal Medicine and Clinical Neurology, Department of Medicine, Faculty of Medical Sciences, College of Medicine, University of Nigeria Enugu Campus. Also employed as Honorary Consultant Physician and Neurologist, Department of Medicine, University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH) Enugu from 2005 till date.
