Brief Biography (English)

Professor Olugbenga Oluseun Oluwagbemi is a C2 NRF (National Research Foundation) rated researcher of South Africa. He is also a DAAD Research Grant-holder and an Oppenheimer Memorial Trust Research Grant-holder in the Department of Mathematical Sciences, Stellenbosch University, South Africa. He received his BSc degree in Computer Science from the University of Ilorin, Nigeria, and his MSc degree in Computer Science from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. Prof. Oluwagbemi also received an Advanced Certificate from the Rochester Institute of Technology, USA. He won a Fulbright Fellowship to conduct his PhD research at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins University, USA, in year (2010-2011) and defended his PhD thesis at Covenant University, Nigeria, in year 2012. Prof. Oluwagbemi won and successfully completed an NRF Innovation Postdoctoral research fellowship at Stellenbosch University, South Africa, between years (2018-2020). He also won and successfully completed an African-Oxford (AfOx) Initiative Research Fellowship & Grant to the Big Data Institute,  Li Ka Shing Centre for Health Information and Discovery, Nuffield Department of Medicine of the University of Oxford , United Kingdom,  in year 2019.

Prof. Oluwagbemi currently holds a DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst) Personal Research Grant, from Germany and an Oppenheimer Memorial Trust (OMT) Personal Research Grant from South Africa and he is utilizing these research grants judiciously in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Stellenbosch University,  South Africa. After successfully teaching some computer science courses at the Department of Computer Science, the University of the Western Cape; (https://www.uwc.ac.za/Pages/default.aspx), Bellville,  South Africa, he later proceeded to assume a very Senior Faculty position at the Sol Plaatje University (which had provisionally been referred to as the University of the Northern Cape), South Africa.

Prof. Oluwagbemi's research interests include Artificial intelligence in health, computational health informatics, informatics in medicine, Information Technology in Health, machine learning, computational modeling, computer-aided diagnosis, bioinformatics and the application of computational methods to solving problems caused by infectious and non-communicable diseases. He is an editorial member of some prestigious international journals. He is a member of the Institute of Information Technology Professionals South Africa (IITPSA), previously known as the Computer Society South Africa (CSSA). He is also a member of the South African Institute of Computer Scientists and Information Technologists (SAICSIT).

Prof. Oluwagbemi has over 14 years of experience in teaching Computer Science courses in Africa and conducting research in different Universities across Africa, America, and Europe. He has published in many prestigious international journals and has been first author and or corresponding author in about 80% of his scientific research publications. He believes in God and pursues quality and rigorous research.
