OLANIYAN, Mathew Folaranmi, is a Professor of Medical Laboratory Science, specialising in Chemical Pathology and Immunology, and Dean, Faculty of Applied Health Sciences, Edo State University, Iyamho (EDSU), Nigeria. He was appointed Professor in 2018 and has served the University in several leadership capacities, including Dean, School of Postgraduate Studies (2019–2023), Head of Department of Medical Laboratory Science (2017–2019), Director of Quality Assurance (2023–2025), and Acting Dean, Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, Kwara State University, Malete, during his sabbatical (2024–2025). He delivered the 5th Inaugural Lecture of Edo State University Iyamho on 7 December 2022.
Professor Olaniyan holds a PhD from Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso (2009), PGDE from the University of Ibadan (2003), MSc from Olabisi Onabanjo University (2002), and AIMLT from University College Hospital, Ibadan (1995). He is a Fellow of the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (FMLSCN, 2017) and a Fellow of the West African Postgraduate College of Medical Laboratory Science in Immunology (FWAPCMLS, 2021). He has over 27 years of teaching experience spanning sub-degree, undergraduate and postgraduate education.
His academic contributions include supervision of more than 12 MSc dissertations and seven PhD theses, with seven PhD candidates currently under his supervision. He has served as External Examiner and Assessor for professional examinations of the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria and as a professorial promotion assessor for several Nigerian universities. He has also participated in numerous NUC and MLSCN accreditation and programme verification exercises across Nigerian universities. He served as a member of the MLSCN Ad Hoc Committee on Education and Examination (2015–2019), participated in NUC VICHBE modules and reviewed NUC accreditation instruments, and contributed as Technical Reviewer to the 30% institutional addition to the NUC CCMAS and the Fundamentals of Allied Health Sciences CCMAS book series.
Professor Olaniyan is an active researcher and author in Medical Laboratory Science, Chemical Pathology, Immunology, infectious diseases and related biomedical fields. He received a TETFund IBR research grant of ₦2,885,000 and ₦6,850,000 for academic manuscript/book development, resulting in two books: Immunology and Immunochemistry and Professional Ethics in Medical Laboratory Science. He also contributed two chapters to the UNESCO textbook Cultural Odyssey, edited by Professor Peter A. Okebukola. He was ranked 96th among Nigeria’s top 500 authors in Biochemistry, Genetics and Molecular Biology based on SCOPUS/SciVal data for 2019–2025.
His professional engagements include participation in the CDC Hepatitis C Diagnostic Summit in Atlanta, USA; the INTEREST 2019 Conference in Accra, Ghana; and national initiatives on equipment management and laboratory leadership. He has participated in West Africa Biorisk Management Trainers’ Network programmes in Praia, Cape Verde (2025), Accra, Ghana (2026), and Dakar, Senegal (2026). He also completed the CDC/US Diplomatic Mission/PEPFAR/APIN Foundations of Laboratory Leadership and Management Training of Trainers programme in Abuja in 2025.
Professor Olaniyan continues to contribute to medical laboratory education, research, professional development, quality assurance, accreditation, biorisk management and institutional leadership in Nigeria and internationally.
