Dr. Effiom Essien Oku is a Registered Soil Scientist holding the PhD degree in Applied Soil Physics and Climate Change Science from the University of Ibadan. He also received advanced training at the College on Soil Physics, Abdul Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), Trieste, Italy. Oku is with the Department of Soil Science, University of Abuja, Nigeria. He was a Visiting Professor to Embrapa, Brazil, and a Distinguished Senior Research Fellow leading the Land and Water Program of the United Nations University (UNU). His research focused on the use of natural tools for soil management, climate change adaptation, and mitigation and desert agriculture where he guided a PhD work at the University of Namibia. His research unlocks the potentials of African vetiver grass to treat industrial effluents control erosion and rehabilitates contaminated lands. He was awarded a research grant by the Embrapa, Brazil. The project focused on developing climate adaptation- a nutrition-sensitive cropping system. He leads several international, multicultural, transdisciplinary projects in different regions, including Ghana, Namibia, Germany, etc. He is a life member of the Soil Conservation Society of India. Member of the College of Research Associate (CRA) of United Nations University also many national and international professional bodies.
