Professor Augustine Ohisamaiye Okhamafe has a BPharm degree & a 1st Class Honours from University of Benin and a PhD in Pharmaceutical Technology from the University of Bradford in the United Kingdom. He has a certificate in Strategic Planning from the Centre for Management Development in Lagos, is a member of the Nigerian Institute of Management as well as a Fellow of the Industrial Institute of Administration (FIIA). He is held top management positions at the University of Benin including Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy; Executive Chairman, Information & Communication Technology Unit; Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic, Ag.), and member of Governing Council. He has also served as a member of the Governing Councils of the foremost bodies in the pharmacy profession in Nigeria – Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN) and Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN).
Prof Okhamafe set up the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Unit at the University of Benin and spearheaded the automation of the university’s Library operations and student records. He pioneered the PharmD programme in Nigeria as Dean and Chairman of Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN) Education Committee, as well as conceptualised and played a crucial role in planning and implementation of the Special PharmD Programme promoted by Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN) and domiciled at the University of Benin, Nigeria, 2017 - 2020 .
Prof Okhamafe has served and/or is still serving as a consultant and expert to various public and private organisations/firms within and outside Nigeria including the following: National Programme on Immunisation (NPI) which entailed the distribution, monitoring and evaluation activities pertaining to oral polio vaccines across several states in Nigeria; Abbot Laboratories Inc, Montreal, Canada as an expert on omeprazole issues; Federal Government/United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) Working Group on oral rehydration therapy (ORT) advocacy and utilisation issues; Federal Ministry of Health’s Committee on Essential Medicines List/National Drug Formulary; and Federal Ministry of Health’s Expert Committee on National Pharmacopoeia. He has also undertaken several studies on social pharmacy issues including drug utilisation, prescribing practices and quality of antimalarial drugs in open markets in Nigeria, etc.
Prof Okhamafe is a winner of numerous awards amongst which are the 1st Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Heads of State Prize for Excellence in African Pharmacopoeia; 1st May & Baker Prize for Excellence in Pharmaceutical Sciences; and Outstanding Contribution Award at the 1st Nigerian Universities Research & Development Fair, Abuja. He is a recipient of several research grants from, amongst others, European Union (joint grant, 7th Framework); United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO); Raw Materials Research and Development Council, Abuja; National Science and Technology Fund.
Prof Okhamafe is a Fellow of both the West African Postgraduate College of Pharmacy and the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, as well as of the Nigerian Academy of Pharmacy. He is the founding and current Editor-in-Chief of the Web of Science-indexed Tropical Journal of Pharmaceutical Research, and has published widely.
