Brief Biography (English) Mr. Javan Okendo, is currently a final year PhD student at the University of Cape Town, South Africa. Javan holds a masters degree in bioinformatics (with distinction) from the University of Cape Town and a Bachelor's degree in Molecular biology from Kenyatta University Kenya. Javan has a passion for Big Data analysis and translational research. He has worked as a Bioinformatician at Novartis Pharma in Basel, Switzerland. Before that he worked as a research assistant at the Centre for research in therapeutic sciences, Strathmore University, Kenya. Javan Okendo is a Kenyan citizen and a South African permanent resident. Javan's research interest is on infectious diseases, specifically malaria and human tuberculosis. In human tuberculosis, Javan's research is focused in the understanding of the correlates of protection and susceptibility to TB and how this information can be used to inform critical sectors specifically, public health. In malaria, he is interested in understanding the molecular evolution of plasmodium falciparum during treatment with the ACT drugs and how this information can be used to inform the public policy makers on the potential drug resistance development and how this can be detected in time. His personal mission is to develop individual and Organizational capacities for positive societal transformation.
