Brief Biography (English)

Dr Xolisa Nxele is a postdoctoral fellow at the University of the Western Cape(UWC). Her PhD in Biotechnology was sponsored and carried out at the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) with University of the Western Cape(UWC) as her host university. Her Honours and Masters degrees were equally obtained at University of the Western Cape(UWC) in the field of Biotechnology, while her undergraduate degree was obtained in Medical Bioscience at the same institution. During her Hons and MSc years, she looked at the effects of abiotic stress on Sorghum bicolour and Sugar graze respectively, on plants and how the plants overcome these stresses, with the hope of developing plants that can leverage these stress response mechanisms. Her PhD research was tailored towards identifying biomarkers that could detect diabetic cardiomyopathy at its asymptomatic stage. She is currently, involved in a joint project involving the University of the Western Cape and the University of South Africa (UNISA), under the supervision of Prof. Rina Swart and Dr Elize Symington. Her current project is looking at the effects of anaemia, HIV, and hypertension on the cardiovascular system. Dr Nxele is committed to using her academic background and research experience to foster research that is dedicated to eradicating hunger and having access to good health and well-being in line with sustainable development goals.
