Professor Nwankwo has carved a remarkable path in academia since embarking on his career at the University of Ilorin in 2002. His journey has taken him across borders, serving as a professor at Kampala International University in Uganda from 2016 to 2019, before returning to Nigeria to join the Federal University Kashere in 2019. Currently, he plays a pivotal role as a Council Member and Chapter Liaison Director of the Nigerian Institute of Physics, where he acts as the de facto International Linkage Director, fostering global collaborations in the field.
His extensive leadership experience includes serving as the Director of Research and Development at the Federal University Kashere, Principal and Dean of the College of Education, Open and Distance eLearning at Kampala International University, and the Founding Head of the Department of Geophysics at the University of Ilorin. Additionally, he has contributed significantly as the Postgraduate Coordinator (Physics) at the University of Ilorin and has been an influential member of the Board of the MES Programme at KU Leuven.
Professor Nwankwo's dedication to Earth and Environmental Physics research has earned him prestigious fellowships, including Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Physics (FNIP) and Fellow of the Institute of Physics (FInstP) in the UK, both awarded in 2024, as well as Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society (FRAS) in 2023. His commitment to advancing scientific knowledge was recognized when he was appointed as a UNESCO/TWAS Associate in 2022. He is also a Regular Associate of the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), a Fellow of the Nigerian Young Academy (FNYA), and COMEG (The Council of Nigerian Mining Engineers and Geoscientists) registered.
His academic credentials are impressive, with a BSc in Physics from the University of Port Harcourt (1998), an MSc (2002) and PhD (2007) in Physics from the University of Ilorin, and two additional master’s degrees aimed at enhancing higher education in developing economies: an MSc in Educational Studies from KU Leuven (2013) and an MA in Online and Distance Education from the Open University in the UK (2021).
Professor Nwankwo is committed to continuous professional development, having participated in various programmes, including refresher courses at the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing and the IGGP Programme at the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies. He has represented his field at significant global forums, such as the United Nations General Assembly on Environment and the Partnership for Enhanced and Blended Learning Network Meeting of the Association of Commonwealth Universities.
An influential alumnus of the Commonwealth Scholarship in the UK and the EU’s Erasmus Mundus Scholarships, he is also a recipient of the Federal Government of Nigeria Scholarship. Beyond his academic pursuits, Professor Nwankwo is deeply engaged in community service, serving as a Special Marshal with the Nigerian Federal Road Safety Corps and as a member of the Nigeria Referees’ Association. He actively volunteers in grassroots mathematics and physics education initiatives and champions environmental advocacy, promoting clean environment campaigns within his community.
