Dr Edward Netherlands recently completed his PhD on the ecology, systematics, and evolutionary biology of frog blood parasites in northern KwaZulu-Natal. His PhD, a joint between KU Leuven, Belgium, and North-West University, RSA, formed part of the VLIR-OUS program for the Development of tools for sustainable utilization and management of aquatic resources in South Africa. Case study: the Lower Phongola River and floodplain. Currently, he is a Postdoctoral fellow at the North-West University and his research includes the documentation and comparisons of ectotherm blood parasite species diversity and phylogenetic relationships, and ecological studies on their host, vector and parasite relationships.
