Dr Mark Napier is Principal Researcher at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in Pretoria and Visiting Professor in the Centre for Development Support at the University of the Free State. His research interests include housing and land policy, land markets, housing transformations, home-based enterprises, township economies, and many aspects of informal settlements. As part of his twenty five years’ experience, in addition to the work at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Dr Napier spent two years in government, initiating and running a research unit in the South African Department of Human Settlements, and seven years establishing and managing the United Kingdom Aid-funded Urban Land Markets Programme.
