Brief Biography (English)

Johan Muller was appointed professor in the School of Education at the University of Cape Town in 1990 and Senior Research Scholar in the Research Office in 2015. He holds a PhD from the University of Cape Town. He has been a visiting professor at University College London, Extraordinary Professor at the University of Stellenbosch, and has held visitorships at the Maison des Sciences de l’Homme, Paris, France; Cambridge University, UK; University of Newcastle, Australia; University of Hong Kong; University of Oslo, Norway; and the University of Melbourne, Australia. In South Africa, he has held visitorships at the Council on Higher Education; Higher Education South Africa; and the Centre for Higher Education Transformation. He has consulted extensively to research and evaluation projects i.a. Nottingham University, UK (ESRC grant); Centre for Higher Education, SA (Carnegie and Ford); Joint Education Trust, SA (Chairman’s Fund of Anglo American) and the Nordic Institute for Studies in Innovation, Research, and Education, Norway. He has been a co-Principal Investigator on projects for Andrew Mellon, Western Cape Department of Education, and the British Academy. He has supervised numerous doctoral and master’s dissertations. He is rated by South Africa’s National Research Foundation as a scholar with an international reputation, and is one of the top ten nationally rated academics in the field of education in South Africa.
