Professor John C Mubangizi is the Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of the Free State, South Africa - a position he has held since February 2018. He holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) of Makerere University, a Masters in Public Law (LLM) of the University of Cape Town and a Doctorate in Law (LLD) of the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN). He is the author of the book entitled The Protection of Human Rights in South Africa: A Legal and Practical Guide (Juta & Company: 2004 and 2013) and has published more than 70 peer-reviewed journal articles mainly on human rights. He has also presented papers at several national and international conferences both in South Africa and several other countries including the UK, the US, Norway, Netherlands, Poland, Italy, Germany, Kenya, Uganda, Mauritius, Greece, Brazil, Peru, Canada, and Zambia. Professor Mubangizi's main academic disciplines are Constitutional Law and Human Rights and his research areas are Socio-economic rights, rights of vulnerable and marginalized groups, poverty, human rights education, and human rights institutions. He has also done research on human rights and gender-related cultural practices, corruption, and public interest litigation. Professor Mubangizi has been a National Research Foundation (NRF) rated researcher (C rating) since 2005 which is the same year he was promoted to the position of Full Professor. Since then he has served as a Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of KwaZulu-Natal and a Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the same University (2007 - 2017). He is a Member of the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) and served as Advisor and Member of the ASSAf Council (2012 – 2015). He also served as Chair of the Higher Education Quality Committee (HEQC) and a Member of the Council on Higher Education (CHE) of South Africa (2015 – 2018).
