Muthama Muasya is Associate Professor and Head of Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Cape Town (UCT). He was Honorary Research Associate at the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew (1999-2019); Research Scientist in the National Museums of Kenya (1993-2007); and Member of South African Association of Botanists (SAAB, in council 2012-2014). He serve as Member of steering committee in the Foundational Biodiversity Information Programme (FBIP). Muasya's research Interests include Cypereceae: taxonomy and conservation, phylogenetics and biogeography, genome evolution; the taxonomy, speciation and macroevolution of the Cape flora with current focus on Cyperaceae and Fabaceae; Wetland diversity and sustainable extraction of macrophytes; and the origin, diversity and utilization of the African savanna biom, He serves on editorial boards of several journals such Plant Ecology and Evolution, Phytotaxa and Phytokeys. Muasya have been teaching courses in Biodiversity and Evolutionary Biology and his research is predominantly on Angiosperm Systematics.
