Brief Biography (English)

Mr Gaone Mokhawa graduated from North Dakota State University, USA with a BSc degree in Biotechnology and a Minor in Biochemistry in 2004. He then joined the KBL as a Quality Controller from January to June 2005. In July 2005, Mr Mokhawa joined the National Food Technology Research Centre (NFTRC) in Botswana, as a Food Research Scientist at the Department of Microbiology and Biotechnology.

In 2014 he joined the Research Group in Bioinformatics at Rhodes University, South Africa, as an MSc student and graduated in 2016 with an MSc in Biochemistry (Bioinformatics).

Mr Mokhawa resumed his work at the NFTRC in 2016, before joining the Botswana University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (BUAN) in 2019 as a Lecturer of Food Biotechnology.

In addition to his Lecturing duties, Mr Mokhawa conducts Research in food microbiology, food biotechnology and food safety. He has a strong research interest in the identification of fermentation microorganisms in fermented foods and beverages of Botswana and the use of Bioinformatics and metagenomics tools for the identification and exploitation of fermentation enzymes. Mr Mokhawa is also interested in sorghum proteins, genetically modified organisms and genetic engineering.
