Brief Biography (English)

Dr Trisha Mogany serves as a specialist research technician at the Institute for Water and Wastewater Technology based at the Durban University of Technology. She obtained her PhD in Biotechnology at Durban University of Technology. Her PhD study involved isolation and identification of unique halophilic unicellular cyanobacterium, Euhalothece sp. with full genome characterisation as well as the extraction and purification of a high-value product, C-phycocyanin. Her research focus over the past 10 years has been algal biotechnology with a focus on strategies to enhance the production of value-added products/metabolites. Her research interests also include bioremediation, nutrient recovery from waste substrates as well as algal physiology and photosynthesis. She also has experience and knowledge in genomic and insilico protein analysis. She has published six first-author papers in accredited journal articles and contributed to six reviewed conference proceedings. She has an extensive supervision record of BTech and Inservice trainees (sixteen) and currently serves as co-supervisor for one master’s and one PhD student and mentored four interns. Dr Mogany is a recognised reviewer for several journals. She is currently involved in the technical and administration of international and national projects at the Institute including National Research Foundation-South African Research Chairs Initiative (NRF-SARChI), Japan International Cooperation Agency-Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development (JICA-SATREPS) and KwaZulu-Natal Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (KZN-EDTEA) Aquaculture. She has spent a significant amount of time in developing and nurturing hey research and scientific skills, and truly believe that the learning never stops, and is always willing to learn new techniques and technology to improve herself.
