Thaddeus Metz is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Pretoria. Previously, he was Distinguished Professor at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) for the period 2014 t0 2019, affiliated with the Department of Philosophy. He earned his PhD in Philosophy from Cornell University in 1997. Since then he has become recognised for his research on four major topics in value theory: appealing to the concept of human dignity to resolve moral controversies in law, politics, business, and medicine; interpreting the African ethic of ubuntu in an analytic, theoretical way; systematically developing and evaluating principled approaches to what makes life meaningful, and addressing normative issues in higher education. Metz has had more than 150 scholarly manuscripts accepted for publication and more than three dozen of these reprinted, often with translations into languages that include Chinese, Dutch, Farsi, German, Igbo, Polish and Portuguese. Some recent honours include an ‘A’ rating from the NRF; the Vice-Chancellor’s Distinguished Award for Research from UJ; and an invitation to compose an essay titled ‘What Africa Can Contribute to the World’ from the United Nations.
