Graeme Meintjes is Professor of Medicine, SARChi Chair of Lung Infection and Immunity in Poverty-Related Disease and Wellcome Trust Fellow at the University of Cape Town. He is an Infectious Diseases Physician and a clinician-scientist based at UCT. He obtained his medical degree and PhD from UCT, and a master’s in public health from Johns Hopkins University. He is a fellow of the College of Physicians of South Africa, and the Royal College of Physicians of Glasgow. He has been awarded two Wellcome Trust fellowships and holds the DSI/NRF SARChI Chair of Lung Infection and Immunity in Poverty-related Diseases at UCT. His research focuses on improving understanding of pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of the clinical complications that affect patients with advanced HIV disease, including HIV-associated tuberculosis, immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome and cryptococcal meningitis. He has been led or principal investigator on several clinical trials addressing treatment strategies for these conditions.
