Dr Sydney Mavengahama is a Systems Agronomist with a transdisciplinary background in crop production, crop improvement, soil science, and seed production.
His current research interests are the genetic improvement of underutilized indigenous African leafy vegetables. He has been involved in agronomy, crop nutrition, promotion and the genetic improvement of underutilized indigenous African Leafy Vegetables (ALVs). These ALVs include Amaranthus (Amaranthus spp), Cat’s whiskers (Cleome gynandra), blackjack (Bidens pilosa), wild okra (Corchorus olitorius), nightshade (Solanum retroflexum complex).
The crop improvement part of his research has largely been germplasm acquisition, pre-breeding and participatory promotion in cereal-based subsistence farming systems.
