Dephney Mathebula is currently working at the University of South Africa(UNISA) as an Associate Professor and supervises a number of postgraduate students. She is a member of Black Women in Science (BWIS) and African Women in Mathematical Sciences Association . In 2018, she broke the record at UNIVEN by becoming the first South African to obtain a PhD in Mathematics and the first female to obtain PhD in Mathematics in Muyexe Village where she was born. She holds a BSc in Mathematics and Statisticsa and BSc Hons in Mathematics from UNIVEN, BSc Hons in Biomathematics, and MSc in Biomathematics from Stellenbosch University (SU) and, PhD in Mathematics from UNIVEN. Her research interest is in Applied Mathematics (Biomathematics), where her main focus is on mathematical modelling of infectious diseases such as Malaria, Influenza, and Schistosomiasis. As a result of her PhD research study, a number papers have been published so far and one paper was rated number 3 under 25 Hottest Articles in the whole world in 2014 in Mathematical Biosciences Journal. She has also presented some of her research outputs (1) in Spain: Sixth International Conference on Infectious Disease Dynamics in 2017, from 29 November to 01 December; (2) in Dubai, UAE: Neglected Tropical Diseases Congress in 2018, December 05-06 and (3) In Charleston, SC, USA, 7th International Conference on Infectious Disease Dynamics in 2019, December 03-06. Apart from doing Mathematical modelling research and lecturing, she is also involved in outreach activities that aim to contribute to uplifting young girls from rural areas to pursue careers in STEM.
