Professor Tonderayi Sylvester Matambo is an Associate Professor at the University of South Africa (UNISA). He obtained his PhD in Biochemistry and Post Doc in Biochemical Engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand. He also obtained his MSc in Biochemistry, BSc Honours in Biotechnology and BSc in Biochemistry from Rhodes University. He also completed his MBA and Programme in Business Management from the University of South Africa (UNISA). Prof Matambo's work is around bioremediation and bioenergy, where he investigate the microorganisms involves and how they function and operate to improve the efficiency and optimization of biogas production from various feedstock such as animal and agricultural waste in a move of remediation and energy production. His work is interdisciplinary where he work with Chemical Engineers to investigate the limits of the bacteria using thermodynamic tools. He also work with microorganisms in the removal of waste contaminants in Industrial wastewater. In the project, Prof Matambo's interest is in using constructed wetlands, which mimic natural wetlands which act as filtration systems that efficiently remove pollutants from water using a variety of microorganisms and plants working together in a well-crafted ecosystem. Understanding how this works helps develop treatment systems that can treat different industrial and domestic waste stream which in turn puts less pressure on current wastewater treatment. Prof Matambo's interest in the Science and industry has lead him to pursue a career in bioprocessing. Being a scientist and working in a Chemical Engineering environment has been very interesting.
