Dr Lucia Marchetti is an extragalactic astronomer and passionate science communicator. Her research focuses on the multi-wavelength identification, physical characterisation and statistical studies of extragalactic populations of star-forming galaxies, AGNs and strong gravitational lensing systems.
Dr Marchetti obtained an MSc (Cum Laude) in Astronomy in 2008 and a PhD in Astronomy in 2012 both from the University of Padova. Between November 2012 and March 2017, she worked as STFC Post-Doctoral Research Associate in Astronomy at the Open University (OU) in Milton Keynes (United Kingdom). In 2017 she moved to South Africa and till February 2020 she worked as South African Research Chairs Initiative (SARChI) Postdoctoral fellow in a joint position between the University of Cape Town and the University of the Western Cape.
She is the project scientist of the Institute for Data Intensive Astronomy (IDIA) visualisation Lab based at University of Cape Town (https://vislab.idia.ac.za/) involved in projects aimed to exploit novel immersive 3D data visualisation technologies (e.g. VR and planetaria) for Big Data research and for science communication/education purposes. Since March 202o she is a Senior Lecturer in the Astronomy Department at the University of Cape Town. Her h-index is 37 and a complete list of her publications is available on-line through the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO)/(NASA) National Aeronautics and Space Administration Astrophysics Data System at this link https://bit.ly/2V7yEyg.
