Professor Adrian David Marais is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Pathology at the University of Cape Town Health Sciences Faculty where he was the former Head of the Division of Chemical Pathology. Prof Marais obtained his MB ChB at the University of Cape Town in 1977 and did his internship at Groote Schuur Hospital followed by senior house officer posts at Red Cross Children’s and Groote Schuur Hospital. He specialized in internal medicine at Groote Schuur Hospital in 1984. A Medical Research Council scholarship supported studies in Medical Biochemistry along his line of interest: lipidology. He participated in pharmaceutical development studies and developed a diagnostic and research laboratory for lipid and lipoprotein disorders. He has collaborated with lipidologists in Australia, England, Holland, and the United States of America.
