Brief Biography (English)

Dr Patrick Mapulanga is a Senior Assistant Librarian at the Kamuzu College of Nursing Library in Malawi (2019 to date). He has also worked as Acting Librarian (KCN, 2013-2015), as Assistant Librarian (Chancellor College, 2010-2013), and Assistant Librarian (Central Library Services, 2006-2010).

Dr Mapulanga holds a PhD in Information Studies from the University of Cape Town, South Africa, (2018), and a Master in Library and Information Studies from the University of Botswana. In 2003 he obtained a BSc in Education from Mzuzu University in Malawi.

While pursuing his PhD, Dr Mapulanga Taught Information Architecture and Metadata to MPhil students at the University of Cape Town (UCT, 2018), and was an Evening Senior at the Chancellor Oppenheimer Library, UCT Libraries (2017). He has Supervised 6 Masters’ students in LIS (2017-2018), 4 Postgraduate Diploma Students in LIS (2017) and 11 MALA Certificate Students (2009-2015). Dr Mapulanga is currently Supervising one PhD student at UCT (2019 to date). He was a Course Convener for the MLIS programme at UCT (2018), a Reviewer of PhD Proposals (2018) and a Member of the Ethics Review at UCT (2018). Currently, he is an External Examiner for the Department of Knowledge and Information Stewardship, UCT (2019-2021), Department of Library and Information Science, Mzuzu University (2019).

Dr Mapulanga has Published over 15 Journal Articles in international and peer-reviewed Journals such as the Journal of Health Organisation and Management and Leadership in Health Services (2019). In LIS he has Published in The Library Review (2015, 2013), The Bottom Line (2014, 2013, 2012), OCLC Systems and Services (2012), Performance Measurement and Metrics (2011), The Electronic Library (2013).

Currently, Dr Mapulanga is a Reviewer for the South African Journal of Libraries and Information Science (SAJLIS, 2016-2020); The Bottom Line (2015-to date), Information Development (2016- to dater) and the Library Management (2017- to date), Information Discovery and Delivery (2020).

He has won international Awards such as the Honorary Award as one of the best SAJLIS Journal Reviewers (2017), the University of Cape Town Incoming International Student Award (2017, 2018), INASP Small Grants Award (2013/2014).

Dr Mapulanga has participated in the Assessment of Institutions of Higher Learning specifically Administration and Library Standards with the National Council for Higher Education (2019), Evaluation of the Ministry of Health Library and Resource Centre (2015); Establishment of the Chinyasa Resource Centre with the World Vision International (2013); Malawi Universities Development Programme (2012-2013) and the Malawi University of Science and Technology Taskforce (2013) towards the costing of library equipment, staff structure for MUST. He is a Member of the South African Library Association (2018 to date), Malawi Library Association (2006 to date), the Malawi Library and Information Consortium (2013 to date).

Dr Mapulanga has Expertise in Information Literacy Training, Journal Writing, Journal Peer-Reviewing, Research Supervision, Proposal Writing, Systematic Reviews, Bibliometrics, the Cataloguing of Library Materials and Evaluation of Libraries, Knowledge Translation and Library Management.
