Brief Biography (English)

Dr Stanley Maphosa is a Contract Lecturer in the Department of Anthropology and Development Studies at the  University of Zululand in South Africa. He lectures Integrated Rural Development, Integrated Local Economic Development, Industry and Development and Research Methodology. He also Lectures Anthropology and Communication to the final year Engineering Students (AnthroEngineering). He also supervises Honours, Masters and PhD Students, Researches and publishes as well as Coordinates the Department’s Community Engagement function.  Dr Stanley Maphosa is also the CEO and Principal Investigator at S3R Consulting. Dr Maphosa is also a Research Fellow at the at the University of Johannesburg (UJ).

Prior to joining the University of Zululand, he was the Chief Programs Officer and Interim Chief Executive Officer (ICEO) at the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund and an International & National Liaison Manager at the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf). He is the former Regional Coordinator of The World Academy of Science Sub–Saharan Africa Regional Partner (TWAS-SAREP). At ASSAf, Dr Maphosa and his team worked to establish and maintain bilateral and multilateral relations worldwide.

Dr Maphosa is a science diplomat, communicator, adviser, and advocate. Through his work with The World Academy of Science Sub–Saharan Africa Regional Partner (TWAS-SAREP), the regional partner has reached 43 science and technology lagging countries and benefited many young scientists. His work includes providing leadership and guidance to the South African Chapter of the Organisation for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD), the South African Young Academy of Science (SAYAS), and hosting the International Science Council Regional Office for Africa (ISC-ROA).

Dr Maphosa is a Disaster Management Professional affiliated with the Disaster Management Institution of Southern Africa (DMISA), a member of the International Government Science Advisers (INGSA), and a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). He holds a PhD in Social Sciences from the University of Fort Hare (UFH).

Before his tenure at ASSAf, Dr Maphosa worked for 12 years at World Vision International, where he held executive roles in Community Development, Disaster Management, Advocacy, and External Engagement. He has advanced skills in people management, financial management, monitoring and evaluation, communication, and project and program management. He has successfully fundraised nationally, regionally, and globally in various roles and managed multimillion-dollar projects. Before joining World Vision, was trained for 4 years in Pedagogy as a schoolteacher, going on to teach at primary to tertiary levels for over 10 years. Dr Maphosa is an author of four books and an internationally sought-after speaker on Leadership Development, Youth, and Women Empowerment. He has consulted locally and internationally for the United Nations Technology Bank.
