Brief Biography (English)

Dr Matome Andrias Madilindi, a Professional Natural Scientist, is currently employed by the Agricultural Research Council of South Africa as a Post-Doctoral Researcher in Animal Breeding and Genetics. He is also a registered full member of the South African Society of Animal Science (SASAS). His research expertise activities include 1) Developing and validating mathematical models using easy-to-measure proxies for prediction of feed efficiency traits in dairy cows, so that they can be applied to generate large data for genetic evaluations and management; 2) Estimating genetic and non-genetic (environmental) parameters influencing functional (e.g., feed efficiency, milking temperament, udder health, stillbirth and calving difficulty), novel (e.g., heat stress, methane emissions) and milk production traits (e.g., milk, energy-corrected milk yields, protein, fat and lactose contents), for genetic improvement in dairy cattle; 3) Performing genome-wide association analysis for feed efficiency in dairy cattle; and 4) Ascertaining genetic diversity of cattle populations using molecular markers. He has scientifically contributed 9 peer-reviewed journal articles (with > 100 citations), 2 international conference short papers, 1 popular article in DairyMail, and 30 abstracts and presentations in the national and international conference proceedings.

Dr Madilindi has peer-reviewed several scientific articles for international journals, such as Tropical Animal Health and Production, Scientific Reports, Annals in Animal Science, Genetics and Molecular Biology, and Dairy Science and Management. Has examined a master's dissertation and a PhD thesis, as well as mentored 2 master's students to completion in 2022 and 2024. Among other trainings, he has also been trained as facilitator, assessor and moderator.  Dr Madilindi is the recipient of the 2024 SASAS Bronze Medal, which was awarded for his PhD Thesis in acknowledgement of exceptional meritorious and original research in furtherance of Animal Science.
