Prof Shabir Madhi is Director MRC: Respiratory and Meningeal Pathogens Research Unit, DST/NRF Research Chair for Vaccine-Preventable Disease and Professor of Vaccinology at the University of the Witwatersrand. He is a Paediatrician with a sub-specialty in Infectious Diseases and obtained his PhD from the University of the Witwatersrand.
Prof Madhi has been an A-rated Scientist by the National Research Foundation since 2011. His Research interests include clinical, molecular and immunological epidemiology of vaccine-preventable diseases specifically among children and pregnant women.
In addition, Prof Madhi is involved in clinical trials on vaccine-preventable diseases, some of which have been pivotal in making global recommendations by the World Health Organisation for the introduction of life-saving vaccines into childhood immunization programmes.
Prof Madhi has built an international reputation in the field of vaccination against pathogens causing pneumonia, as well as the effectiveness of vaccines in HIV-positive children. His current Research focuses on vaccination of pregnant women to prevent infection associated stillbirths and morbidity and mortality among young infants.
Prof Madhi has contributed to over 300 Peer-Reviewed Articles in various high-ranking Journals and to nine Book Chapters.
