Brief Biography (English)

Mrs Khanani Machumele loves science and engineering and she believes that she can use it to change and improve her community and country. She is very hardworking and enjoys thinking of new and innovative ideas.

She is currently a PhD student in chemistry at the University of the Witwatersrand and the aim of her project is to make anti-cancer peptides containing the iRGD integrin-binding sequence and conjugating then to the enhanced carbon dots. They will also investigate the properties of N-doped carbon dots decorated with Germanium, and monitor the photoluminescence and anti-cancer properties.

Mrs Machumele is a demonstrator for lab experiments for first years, the second year, and third-year students for Organic chemistry at Wits, and she also works as a student assistant at Wits CCDU. She is also part of Wits Whizzbang which is a group of Postgraduate Chemists who enjoy illustrating educational and fun chemistry experiments by going to primary schools and high schools to showing them experiments. Her goal is to work in the industry and apply her knowledge. In 10 years from now, her dream is to start a peptide company that produces medical and cosmetic products.
