Brief Biography (English)

Dr Fanuel Josephat Ligate received his BSc Ed in Chemistry and Biology, and MSc in Chemistry in 2009 and 2014 respectively from the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. He obtained his PhD in Land Water Resources Engineering from the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Sweden in 2023. He joined Mkwawa University College of Education, a constituent college of the University of Dar es Salaam in November 2009 as a tutorial assistant in the Department of Chemistry where is currently working as a Lecturer. Dr Ligate is passionate about positively contributing to holistic human health and welfare by investing his knowledge, skills, and expertise in improving sustainable access to safe drinking water for all.

Dr Ligate has a solid background in Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Science, and his current research interests are broadly in (i) investigating the hydrogeochemistry (source, transport, and fate) of inorganic (e.g. arsenic and fluoride), organic (emerging contaminants, pesticide residues) and microbial (bacteria and viruses) contaminants in the environmental matric (water, soil, and air) (ii) investigating on minerals and mineral balances in drinking water from natural and commercial sources (iii) investigating on efficient, cost-effective and sustainable remediation strategies for contaminated water. By using field, laboratory (analytical), and theoretical (modeling) methods, the overall goal of his research endeavour is to understand and appropriately address the local and global water quality challenges. His research involvement has resulted in several publications in peer-reviewed journals, conference proceedings, and policy briefs.
