Dr Lekhooa is a pharmacologist with a research focus on ethnopsychopharmacology. Her current work focuses on using animal models of depression and meth-addiction to establish the effects of indigenous plants. Furthermore, evaluating their role in the modulation of peripheral and neuro-inflammation. She has experience in quality control of medicinal plants using chromatographic techniques, in vitro assays and CYP 450 activity assays . Dr Lekhooa also a study director of pre-clinical GLP studies. She is a reviewer of complementary medicines for the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority. Dr Lekhooa is passionate about creating opportunities for the next generation of scientists on the African continent, as such She serves on the inaugural Young Investigator subcommittee of the International Union of Basic and Clinical Pharmacology and as a Secretary-General of the South African Society of Basic and Clinical pharmacology.
