Murray Leibbrandt is a Professor in the School of Economics and the Director of the Southern Africa Labour and Development Research Unit, University of Cape Town (UCT).
He holds the DSD/NRF National Research Chair of Poverty and Inequality Research and is an IZA Research Fellow. Prof Leibbrandt's Research focusses on South African poverty‚ inequality and labour market dynamics using survey data and‚ in particular‚ panel data.
Currently, he is one of the Principal Investigators on the National Income Dynamics Study. He Serves on the Executive Committee of the International Economic Association and is the Chair of ASSAf’s Standing Committee on Science for the Reduction of Poverty and Inequality.
Prof Leibbrandt is a past President of the African Econometric Society and the Economic Society of South Africa. He was a Member of President Mandela’s Presidential Labour Market Commission and is a Member of President Ramaphosa’s Panel of Experts on the National Minimum Wage.
