Dr Pedzisai Kowe is an urban climate, urban land cover change and landscape ecology researcher. He integrates field observations, geospatial technologies, remote sensing, advanced machine and deep learning algorithms and ecological modelling to understand the structure of urban socio-ecological systems, and their link to ecological function. His research interest includes urban growth and heat islands mapping and monitoring, green spaces and vegetation fragmentation analysis in African cities using spatial statistics, statistical modelling, discrete and continuous methods. Dr Kowe has trained and worked with leading organisations in Zimbabwe, Africa and Europe using the information provided by Earth observation satellites and geospatial technologies to manage climate risks, disaster management and land use, and urban planning and management. He is a full member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS).
He holds a PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) in Environmental Science (Remote Sensing) from the University of Kwazulu Natal, South Africa; a Master of Science in Geo-information Science and Earth Observation (Urban Planning and Management) from the University of Twente, The Netherlands; a Masters of Science in Environmental Policy and Planning from the University of Zimbabwe and Bachelor of Honours in Geography from the University of Zimbabwe.
