Brief Biography (English)

Dr Telesphore Kabera is a Senior lecture in Environmental Engineering, College of Science and Technology, University of Rwanda. He was awarded a Distinguished International Students Scholarship by the China Scholarship Council to study for his MSc and PhD at the prestigious China University of Geosciences in Wuhan. He returned to his Alma mater in Kigali in 2011, where his research interests cover a wide range of environmental fields. These include Solid Waste Management (SWM); biogas; indoor air quality; CO₂ sequestration and climate change; Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA); and water and wastewater, specifically water harvesting and constructed wetland.

Dr Kabera was the Principal Investigator for an International Council for Science project: Health effects of indoor air pollution from cooking stoves in Kigali and Dar es Salaam cities: An assessment and solution. He is also a team leader for SIDA (Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency)’s: Strengthening capacity for sustainable bioenergy, waste management and air pollution control in Rwanda. He has also led several SWM projects in Rwanda and recently published a paper in the first open access issue of Waste Management & Research, benchmarking performance of the SWM and recycling system in Kigali and comparing that with four other East African capital cities (Dar-es-Salaam, Kampala, Nairobi and Maputo).

Dr Kabera is a regular peer reviewer for research proposals submitted to the International Council for Science, and for reputable journals including Environmental Science and Pollution Research,  Environment, Development and Sustainability; Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Journal; International Journal of Environmental Studies and Environmental Management Journal. He is currently a member of the Editorial Board for Waste Management and Research Journal and for the Rwanda Journal of Engineering, Science, Technology and Environment (RJESTE); and of the technical committee for international conferences on Renewable Energy and Environmental Engineering (REEE).
